Leonardo participates in InnoTrans 2022: the future of transportation is digital, safe and sustainable

15 September 2022

From 20 to 23 September in Berlin, Leonardo will participate in InnoTrans2022, where the most advanced solutions for smart transportation and mobility, including systems based on the new railway broadband communications standard FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System), are on show.

The exhibition will take place inside the Berlin Exhibition Grounds and will be organised across five themes:  Railway Technology, Railway Infrastructure, Public Transport, Interiors and Tunnel Construction. Leonardo will present its solution FRMCS-MCX Over the Top, validated and certified during the second edition of the Plugtest ETSI on FRMCS from 16 to 20 May 2022. The solution was also recognised at CCW Vienna in June 2022 as ‘The Best MCX solution of the Year’.

The future of transportation: digital, efficient and sustainable

As set out in the Next Generation EU, mobility is evolving towards transportation systems that are ever more interconnected, digital and sustainable. Digital transformation is a key step because it provides fundamental data to optimise service quality and efficiency.  On the other hand, the growing information flow demands stronger data protection against cyber-attacks so every technology for transportation must satisfy the strictest security requirements.

Leonardo is responding to the new challenge of sustainable and multi-modal transportation with several solutions. On-board systems (eNOBU) make vehicles more digital, secure, smart and reliable, while advanced platforms (MATRICS AVM) allow for operational planning, predictive analysis, real-time monitoring and control for operation centres, with solutions already equipped to manage new electric and hybrid vehicles efficiently.

Broadening to Broadband FRMCS – a resilient revolution!

The digital transformation requires greater data transmission capacity to support transportation networks – in terms of quantity, efficiency and reliability – than exists today. Globally, the current railway radio communication standard is GSM-R, which is no longer able to support new operational and business needs and the information flow from new sensors and smart devices installed along transportation networks or on board vehicles

The European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI) and the International Union of Railways (UIC) are promoting the  Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), an advanced telecommunication system for railways, capable of exploiting existing technological innovation (4G/5G)  with its many advantages, without affecting operational services and user experience available today through GSM-R.

The development of the new standard has been defined as a resilient revolution since both technologies will coexist during a transition phase up to the end of support for GSM-R, expected by 2030.

Through FRMCS, it will be possible to transfer more data than with GSM-R, enabling innovative services such as infotainment, e-ticketing, smart maintenance, autonomous and assisted driving.  The influence of data and digital infrastructure means that cyber security must also be considered at the earliest stages of design – so-called ‘cyber security by design’.

Thanks to deep understanding of communications for public safety and railway transportation, achieved by working with leading international and national customers, Leonardo – a member of the TETRA Association and GSM-R industry group – is a key player in this sector. The company is also at the forefront of developing this field of technology based on the new FRMCS standard.
